Birthday website ideas that are not just a photo collage

A grid of photos with 'Happy Birthday' on top is the default, and the default is forgettable. Here are ideas with something to do in them.

Give them something to open

The best birthday pages do not show everything at once. A wrapped present that has to be torn, an envelope with a seal, a card that folds out — the small delay before the reveal is most of the feeling.

It sounds like a gimmick and it is not. Anticipation is why physical presents are wrapped at all.

Make them do something

A jigsaw of a photo of the two of you, which unlocks the message once it is solved. A quiz about your friendship where every wrong answer is funnier than the right one. Candles that have to be tapped out one at a time.

Anything with a hand in it gets finished. A page you only scroll gets abandoned halfway.

Use the year, not just the day

A year-in-review page — the trips, the running jokes, the number of times you ate at the same place — is a stronger birthday gift than anything about the birthday itself. It says you were paying attention all year.

Counting things works unreasonably well. Days known, hours on calls, times one of you said 'last one' about a drink.

Ideas that hold up

A cinema premiere, with their name on the poster and a countdown to doors opening.

A pop-up book that unfolds a new scene per page.

A newspaper front page where every headline is about them.

A vinyl record that plays your song with the sleeve notes written by you.

A boarding pass to a place you are actually going, handed over as the gift itself.

A room you can click around, with an object for each memory.

A constellation where every star is a night worth remembering.

A chat thread recreating the first conversation you ever had.

A scrapbook with everything taped in slightly crooked, the way a real one would be.
